ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dillon Costello is an artist whose work blends the raw intensity of realism with a dynamic graphic novel flair. Drawing inspiration from iconic artists like Todd McFarlane, Alex Pardee, and Chris Panatier, Dillon creates large-scale portraits on wood that are as much about capturing the essence of a subject as they are about telling a visual story. Whether it’s an athlete, musician, beloved pet, or a tribute to the recently deceased, his work is deeply personal and emotionally charged.
Working primarily with Sharpie pens and acrylic paints, Dillon draws directly onto the surface of wood, using the natural grain to enhance the feeling of texture and depth. His creative process is ritualistic: he channels his inner muse by listening to heavy metal music and finding the right sonic mood to match the energy of the piece. This sets the stage for a detailed and deliberate process, where every line and highlight is an intentional step toward bringing his subjects to life.
What distinguishes Dillon's work is his ability to capture the intimate, often overlooked details that make each subject unique. He doesn’t just draw faces—he draws memories, moments, and emotions that allow viewers to connect with the subject in a deeper way. From family portraits to live concert photography, his art is about evoking feelings of nostalgia, joy, and connection. Recently, he has expanded his practice into digital art, photographing his finished pieces and using Photoshop to add color and depth, blending traditional techniques with modern tools.
When it comes to his art, Mr, Costello is not motivated by fame or financial gain, but by the happiness he sees in the faces of those who receive a piece made specifically for them. There’s a purity in his dedication to creating artwork that brings joy and meaning to people’s lives, whether it’s through a custom piece for a client or a photograph capturing the raw energy of a metal concert.
In addition to his visual art, Dillon is the lead vocalist for Mercy Mine, a Bay Area metalcore band. His music and performance style echo the intensity and passion that inform his artwork, furthering his connection between art, sound, and self-expression.
